Q: Will my son or
daughter benefit from online courses?
A: For
many students this form of course delivery works well. Please
take a few minutes to review the ‘Student Profile’
with your son/ daughter to help determine if taking online courses
is an appropriate choice.
Q:
Is there anyone who can help us with the decision to take
an online course?
A: Your
son/ daughter’s day school Guidance Counsellor is available
to discuss online learning. Approval to take a Virtual Schooling
credit must be given by your son/ daughter’s day school
Principal/ Designate.
Q:
What can I do to help my child?
A: Parent
involvement is vital to a student’s success in online learning.
Nearly everyone has experience with traditional classrooms, where
students interact with teachers daily. In online learning, parents
often complement the role of the classroom teacher. Parents can
help by:
- Providing access to a working, adequately equipped computer
with a stable Internet connection. See System
Requirements for more information.
- Providing a specific place (quiet and free from interruptions)
where your child can study and work on school assignments.
- Spending time with your child to help him/ her set goals
and meet deadlines.
- Supervising schoolwork and monitoring progress.
- Giving extra help when needed.
- Providing support, praise and motivation.
- Communicating with the teacher as appropriate.
- Recognizing that technology problems will occasionally arise
and working with your child and the school to resolve them.
Parents who wish to receive a routine update on the progress
of their child should contact the teacher directly.
